Harold W. Whittier, Colonial Beach, Virginia, formerly of Kingston, New Hampshire, a retired Army Colonel, died suddenly July 14, 1973 in Virginia. He was born in South Kingston, New Hampshire, April 10, 1920, son of the late Walter F. and Lulu M. Whittier.
He graduated from Sanborn Seminary and McIntosh Business College, Haverhill, Massachusetts and also received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire. The retired Colonel joined the Army as a private in World War II and also served in the Korean conflict and in Vietnam.
He retired from the Army in January, 1971, as a Colonel. He was a member of Gideon Lodge, AF and AM, and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of Fort Meade, Maryland Episcopal Church, and several lodges including the Shriners and Moose Lodge of Colonial Beach. Besides his wife, Eleanor L. (Hills) Whittier, formerly of Merrimac, Massachusetts, he leaves a son, Brian R. Whittier, a daughter, Barbara J. Whittier King, and two grandchildren, Tamra S. Powers and B. Scott Powers. Funeral was held at Fort Myer Chapel with burial in Arlington National Cemetery.
During his career, Colonel Whittier received the following decorations: Korea Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal; 3 O/S Bars; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; General Staff Identification; Certificate Achievement; Army Commendation Medal; Legion of Merit; National Defense Service Medal W/Oak Leaf Cluster.
Mrs. Eleanor Lane Hills Whittier, widow of Colonel Harold Walter Whittier, died February 24, 1974 at Kimbrough Army Hospital, Fort Meade, Maryland.
She was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, May 27, 1919, daughter of the late Millard Bronson Hills and Merriam Gardner Hills.
She graduated from Haverhill High School in 1937 and from Chandler Secretarial School in 1939. She was employed at the Haverhill National Bank until her marriage to Harold Walter Whittier in 1943. Since that time, she lived in several locations in this country and overseas with her husband in his army career.
Her late residence was Colonial Beach, Virginia. She leaves a daughter, Barbara J. Whittier King and a son, Brian R. Whittier and two grandchildren, Tamra S. Powers and B. Scott Powers. She is buried with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
