Major General Hugh Mackintosh was born 7 October, 1907 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry following his graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1929. His military education includes the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and the United States Army Command and Staff College. General Mackintosh served with the Infantry during the first ten years of service and was detailed to the Quartermaster Corps in 1939.
General Mackintosh made significant contributions to the United States Army and the Quartermaster Corps during three wars. In World War II, he commanded the 471st Quartermaster Group in the European Theater of Operations where he provided Quartermaster support from Normandy through Central Europe to the largest American army ever assembled, the United States First Army. In the Korean conflict, General Mackintosh was Quartermaster for the Eighth United States Army, Commander of the Tokyo Quartermaster Depot, and acting Quartermaster Far East Command. During the early stages of the war in Vietnam, from 1962 to 1966, he was Commanding General, U.S. Army Quartermaster Training Command and Commandant, U.S. Army Quartermaster School, Fort Lee, Virginia. General Mackintosh also served as Commander, Defense Subsistence Supply Center and Commanding General, Columbus General Depot.
General Mackintosh’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (two Oak Leaf Clusters), Croix de Guerre with Silver Star, Cross of the Brigadiers of the Royal Battalion of King George I, Honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and Ulchi Distinguished Military Service Medal with Silver Star. General Mackintosh passed away on May 8, 1974. He is survived by his three children: Robert (LTC, USA Retired), Gayle Ostensoe, and Richard.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
