Born in Virginia in 1947, he was killed-in-action in Vietnam in 1970. He earned the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart as well as the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He is buried in Section 7 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Butch left with his Commanding Officer, Colonel Leftwich, on a copter rescue of a 7 man Recon team in the mountains. The weather was  terrible with fog and clouds.

Lieutenant Rogers managed to extract the team with a SPIE rig as they could not land and it took a long time and a lot of skill. With 7 Marines hanging onto the rig, Rogers crashed into a mountain in the fog and darkness killing all 15
Marines. Every Marine was a combat veteran and hero. Their deaths were devastating to all who knew them. Butch’s job called for facing death every day and he was admired by officers and enlisted men alike. David R. Sanchez.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
