Born in what is now West Virginia on February 7, 1833, he earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War while serving as Second Lieutenant, Company E, 12th West Virginia Volunter Infantry at Winchester, Virginia, on June 14, 1863. The Medal was actaully issued to him on March 6, 1890.
He died on August 6, 1904 and was buried in Section 3 of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Annie M. Clarke Durham (1838-1912), and his daughter, Mary C. Durham (died 1904) are buried with him.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
