Citation:

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Charles D. Rhodes, Captain, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near the barrio of San Nicolas, Pueblo of Bacoor, Cavite, Luzon, Philippine Islands, December 31, 1901.

Captain Rhodes gallantly and fearlessly led an attack on a superior body of insurgents with two men of his troop, killing two of the enemy and wounding two, including their leader, and dispersing the remainder.

MANILA, January 1, 1902 – Lieutenant Charles D. Rhodes ofthe Sixth Cavalry, accompanied by two orderlies, when within six miles of Manila today came across twenty armed insurgents in a cuartel or barracks.  The insurgents shouted “Americanos,” and Lieutenant Rhodes feigned a retreat. But in reality he took the cuartel in flank, and drove out the insurgents, capturing two rifles, three revolvers and some ammunition. Rhodes then burned the barracks down and proceeded to Manila.

Airplane In Which He Was a Passenger Fell 1900 Feet

Paris, December 24, 1918 – The condition of Major General Charles D. Rhodes, who was injured in the fall of an airplane at Louvres, northeast of Paris, Monday afternoon, showed great improvement last night. In the accident, the pilot of the machine, Lieutenant Gilpin, a British officer, was killed.

The pilot, hampered by the dense fog, lost his bearings and was trying to avoid landing in the heart of the city when his machine was hurled down heavily. General Rhodes was taken to the hospital at Louvres and is now in the Amrican Hospital in Paris.

The Generals’condition was said this afternoon to be most favorable.He suffered only injuries to the face and a fracture of the wrist.  His face was badly lacerated and his nose was broken.

Lieutnenat Gilpin was on a flight from Treves, Germany, to Calais, with the machine bearing General Rhodes.  The machine fell 1900 feet.

RHODES ON WAY TO RECOVERY

PARIS, December 25, 1918 – The condition of Major General Charles D. Rhodes, head of the American Armistice Commission, who was injured in the fall of an airplane near Paris on Monday, continues to show improvement today.  Unless unforseen complications occur his complete recovery maybe expected shortly.
