Born at New Lexington, Ohio, November 30, 1882, he received a C.E. degree from Ohio State University in 1907. He married Lela Maud Laughlin, September 2, 1908.
He worked as a draftsman, U.S. Land Office, Cheyenne, Wyoming, 1907; Civil Engineer, Superintendent of Construction, Fort D. A. Russell, Wyoming, 1908-11; Quartermaster Department At Large, Fort D. A. Russell, 1908-11; Superintendent of Construction, U.S. Lighthouse District 11, Detroit, 1911-24; Superintendent in Charge, 1924-33. Chief Engineer, U.S. Lighthouse Service, 1933-35; Deputy Commander, Lighthouses, 1935-39; Captain, U.S. Coast Guard, Operations Officer for Aids to Navigation, Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C., 1939-42; Chief Operations Officer, USCG, July 1, 1942 with the rank of Rear Admiral. He retired on August 1, 1946. He received the Legion of Merit in 1946; Benjamin Lamme Medal from Ohio State University, June 1946, for “meritorious achievement in engineering.” He had been transferred to the U.S. Navy for Operations in World War I.
He died in 1966 and was buried in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Lela Maud Laughlin Park (1888-1979), is buried with him.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
