He earned the Medal of Honor while serving in the Civil War with Company A, 2nd Louisiana Infantry.
He died on September 15, 1897 and was buried in Section 13 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Citation: Volunteered to go within the enemy’s lines and at the head of a party of 8 destroyed a signal station, thereby greatly aiding in the operations against Port Hudson that immediately followed.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
