George W. Lutz, 79, an Air Force test pilot who retired as a Colonel after 30 years of service, died of congestive heart failure January 27, 2000, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia.
Colonel Lutz was a founding member of the Marine Corps Flying Club at Quantico, where he was chief flight instructor at his death. Since his military retirement in 1972, he had provided flight instruction to about 600 students in the Washington area.
Colonel Lutz, a resident of Springfield, had lived in the Washington area since 1956. He was born in Buffalo Prairie, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Iowa.
In 1942, he began his military career. While serving in the Air Force, he received a master’s degree in engineering administration at George Washington University.
His career included assignments in research and development, and command of an air base in Thailand in 1970 and 1971. He received two awards each of the Legion of Merit and the Air Medal.
As a civilian flight instructor, he was chosen twice by the Federal Aviation Administration as East Coast flight instructor of the year. He received two Sport Aviation Major Achievement Awards from the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Colonel Lutz was a founding member and past president of National Capital Chapter 186 of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the National Association of Flight Instructors, the Order of Daedalians and Quiet Birdmen.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Charlotte Lutz of Springfield; three sons, Christopher T. Lutz of McLean, George P. Lutz of Alexandria and Charles T. Lutz of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Elizabeth Trexler of Annandale; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 2, at 10 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5800 Backlick Rd., Springfield. Interment, Arlington National Cemetery, will be private.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
