Marion Saffold was killed in the Phillipines at the head of his regiment during the Philippine Insurrection.


WASHINGTON, October 9, 1899 – General Otis has made the following report to the War Department of yesterday’s fighting:

Schwan, with a column of 1,726 men, Thirteenth Infantry, one battalion of the Fourth Infantry, with cavalry and artillery, left Bacoor yesterday morning, and proceeded to Noveleta. Encountered heavy opposition, Old Cavite and beyond, but drove enemy, capturing two guns and inflicting damages. His casualties, Captain Saffold, Thirteenth Infantry, Killed; Captain McGrath, Fourth Cavalry, seriously wounded; ten enlisted men wounded. Column entering Rosario this morning meeting slight opposition. Navy vessels and Marines at Cavite made demonstration on Noveleta same time. Troops at Imus attacked insurgents at San Nicholas, two miles east of the city, and drive them from the road intersection there. Four men slightly wounded. Enemy left six bodies on the field.

Captain Marion B. Safford, Thirteenth Infantry, who lost his life in the attack on Noveleta yesterday, was a graduate of the Military Academy in the Class of 1879. He was born at Selma, Alabama, September 1, 1856. He participated in the campaign against the Apache Indians in New Mexico and Arizona, and took a creditable part in the campaign against Santiago. In April last he went to the Philippines.
